September tends to be a dumping ground for studios to push out offerings that couldn’t survive in more competitive months. That isn’t the case this weekend as four strong candidates that all appeal to different demographics release this weekend.
Over the last several months it has been proven that audiences are interested in 3D movies, as box office takes have been boosted significantly by the 3D screens. Even mediocre efforts like Final Destination saw a significant chunk of its opening 27 million attributed to the 3D screens. It is even a bigger deal when it comes to family movies. The 3D theaters charge higher prices and are in demand right now.
This weekend brings the arrival of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs which will have have showings in 3D and on IMAX screens. School is back in session and there is nothing really to compete with it in the family sector right now. Reviews as expected have been very good. Look for Meatballs to come in at #1 with about 24 million and have strong legs in the weeks ahead.
Megan Fox takes the lead in Jennifer’s Body which has been marketed towards males, obviously trying to capitalize on her sex appeal. Having strong female leads though and being a horror/comedy it has relatively wide spread appeal. Friday should have strong returns but a drop-off will be expected on Saturday and Sunday. Jennifer’s Body should bring in about 14 million this weekend.
Another worthy option this weekend is a movie that has been pegged as a potential Oscar contender. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Matt Damon it is a comedic take on the true story of a corporate informant. This is not a movie that will necessarily bring people out on opening day or opening weekend but potentially good word of mouth could carry it going forward. Reviews have been positive but somewhat split. The Informant should make about 10 million this weekend.
Jennifer Aniston headlines a romantic comedy with Aaron Eckhart in Love Happens. Aniston has not shown the ability to open a movie big on her own, and this movie has limited appeal. Reviews have been poor so there is no additional buzz to consider there. With all the competition this weekend it will be somewhat drowned out. Love Happens should open with about 7 million.
Opening Predictions:
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: 24 million
Jennifer’s Body: 14 million
The Informant: 10 million
Love Happens: 7 million
